The Future of Architecture Education in Malaysia: Introducing a New Theory of Studiogogy using SOLE Module
The studio subject is central to the architectural based curricula. However, the architectural based education has changed a little in the past twenty years. New ways of thinking about education (and about architecture-based education in particular) have suggested new approaches which are in line with the rapid advances in technology. Hence, educators in architecture pedagogy should integrate technology into their innovative teaching and learning for a more effective lesson. In this research, architectural curricula has been selected to test the SOLE module. This research has examined two architectural schools (one public and one private) on the integration of Studio Oriented Learning Environment (SOLE) module and reviewed how the selected case studies respond to the innovative teaching using SOLE module in their studio subject. The researcher has evaluated the feedback on the use of SOLE in the architectural studio subject to support a new theory of studiogogy for the design based syllabus. This study presents the challenges of incorporating the new approach into the present studio teaching and learning. The results revealed the following: 1) the readiness to change among the tutors is still low; and 2) the students are more than ready to try the new approach in their studio. In summary, this paper has identified disparities in the architectural education and provided solutions to support studiogogy as the new pedagogy for future design education in general and specifically in architectural education.
The circular economy approach in a flexible housing project: A proposal for affordable housing solution in Malaysia
The demand for housing and affordable housing specifically will always become challenges for the government of the day. The solutions at the moment between conventional construction and IBS facing quality and costing problems respectively. In this article, it proposes the introduction of circular economy in a flexible housing project. To support the industrial revolution 4.0, this study is suggesting an alternative approach towards manufacturing the house as a commodity for the users. The idea of a circular economy is to reduce the price consumption by extending the lifespan of the housing unit. Towards the end, this article reports a design workshop conducted with the architects to produce a proof-of-concept of an affordable flexible house using CE (circular economy) principles. The flexible affordable house offers a solution to the lack of affordable housing and proposes alternative solutions to the problems. The study will benefit the government and Malaysians who opt for alternative housing in the future.
Introducing Studio Oriented Learning Environment (SOLE) in UPM Serdang: Accessing Student Centred Learning (SCL) in the architectural studio
This article reports the initial results of the exploratory research related to student-centered learning in final year Architecture’s studio education in UPM. Student centred learning is defined as an approach to empowered the students in their own learning. Although a various study on the adaptability of this concept in education has increased, there is a little to none study conducted for the benefits of an architectural education from studio design perspective. In this article, we defined the Student-centered learning (SCL) as an approach to increase student’s autonomy in learning curve especially in making decision-related to design subjects using summative and formative approach. The objective of this article is to experiment the SOLE model and how it can move forward. The SOLE (Studio oriented learning environment) model encompass lecturing, sharing and peer review that inspired by self-regulated theory. However, several problems and difficulties were identified namely, lacking tutor’s input and problems in discussion dynamic asides from resistance to peer assessment. This article suggests a number of improvements for future recommendations. The study will benefit the educators in the architectural field contribute to help the students to build on unique background knowledge and at the same time let the students generate learning opportunities and reconstruct knowledge dynamically in an open-ended learning environment to implement SCL in the studio module.
